About

Who we are
The Brussels Writers’ Circle is a group for English language prose writers, poets, playwrights, non-fiction writers, screenwriters (and everything in between) based in Brussels. Although we write and discuss in English, you do not necessarily have to be a native speaker in order to join. Apart from English, Scottish, Irish, American, Australian and South African writers, we also have many other nationalities including Dutch, Spain, French, Belgian, Russian, Slovak, Romanian, Seychellois…and more.

When and where
We meet every first and third Tuesday in person at Muntpunt Library and second and last Tuesdays virtually in a Zoom meeting. There is no registration needed to attend, but there is for reading slots. Fill out the form at the join our mailing list link here to receive current BWC news and instructions on how to request to read your work-in-progress to the group for constructive feedback. Please note: Sometimes we need to organise alternate venues due to renovations, booking clashes or what have you, so we’d recommend that you join our mailing list before coming along, as we notify our members of any upcoming changes that way. Online meetings are also announced on this mailing list.

Our format
Every week, members of the group bring pieces of their writing (short stories, poetry, chapters of novels, memoirs, instruction manuals, whatever) to share with the group. They distribute copies of the piece and then read it out loud for everyone. Afterwards we take a few minutes to pepper their pages with our criticisms and compliments, and we then discuss the piece all together.

If you would like to come along just to listen to other people’s work and offer feedback that is fine, but as the group is not just about helping other writers with their work but also developing your own, we do encourage everyone to bring in copies of their writing to share.

We’re rooting for you! Contributions to the Brussels Writers’ Circle website are also welcome from members: submit your polished writerly news, original writing, including stories, novel excerpts, poetry, photos and art work to brusselswriterscircle at gmail.com.

  1. I joined last week and read two draft chapters of a novel – ten writers from a range of countries and interests (fiction, non-fiction, poetry) listened, wrote down their comments on the text and then one by one gave constructive feedback – it was positively delivered and very helpful, noting issues (great and small) to improve the text. Three people presented in all – two finely written poems, two book chapters and an intriguing short story. A very rewarding evening.

  2. Hello Brussels Writers’ Circle. We are writingbrussels.com and it might be nice to exchange some ideas and inspiration. Lets meet up, if you like. Good luck and happy writing. Miguel

  3. Greetings to the members of the Brussels Writers’ Circle. I would like very much to be a member, but, alas, I do not live in Brussels. (I live in Paris, I’m originally from Toronto.)

Is it true that you organize an annual writers’ retreat in May or thereabouts? If you are planning a weekend retreat this year, I’d love to come. I have spent 7 years writing a memoir and I’m due to launch it in June.

à bientôt, j’espère. Below is my blog link. On it you will find several blog posts on Brussels as well as Antwerp and Bruges.
